Just because you don't have health insurance doesn't mean you're out of options. There are three ways our firm can help you cover medical treatment and avoid paying out of pocket.
#1: Med-Pay Coverage
When a person who's been injured in a crash comes to us and reveals that they don't have health insurance, one of the first things we look at is their automobile insurance policy.
We're looking to see if they have med-pay coverage, often abbreviated as MPC in the declarations page. Med-pay coverage is like health insurance for everyone inside the car.
Med-pay covers the driver and any passengers injured in a crash whether or not the driver is at fault.
If MPC is available, the insurance company will pay for any reasonable and necessary medical expenses, up to the limits of the policy.
If you're hesitant about going after money from your own insurance company, don't be. You've paid money into your insurance for years - this is what it is there for. Use it. Don't feel guilty about taking care of yourself and anyone else who is injured.
In Georgia, med-pay coverage is optional. Check your insurance policy to see if you have it. We strongly recommend signing up for it if you don't. It protects you in case of wreck and generally does not cost that much.
#2: Medical Lien
If you don't have med-pay coverage, there is another option. This is where experience in the personal injury field is vital. We connect injured victims with doctors who are willing to treat patients on a lien basis.
This means they don't charge co-pays or other services until the personal injury case is settled or reaches a verdict. Doctors are much more likely to agree to provide medical treatment on a lien basis when a patient has an attorney vouching for them.
These doctors understand that the claimant is hurt and missing work, so they don't have the money at the moment to pay for medical bills.
#3: Contact a Personal Injury Attorney
Regardless, of whether or not you have insurance you should always get prompt medical care after a wreck. A doctor may notice something you don't or the pain may hit you 48 hours later after the effects of adrenaline have worn off.
If you're seriously hurt and struggling with medical bills after an accident that wasn't your fault, contact us at Gary Martin Hays & Associates at (770) 934-8000. We'll review your case and discuss what your best options are moving forward.
If we accept your case, we'll work right away to get you the medical treatment you need. Throughout the process, we'll check in with you and gather your medical bills and records to send them to the insurance company.
Our Georgia attorneys make the process easy. You're dealing with enough as it is - you shouldn't have to worry about red tape and paying expensive medical bills.
