There are no good reasons to hit and run, but some drivers flee the scene anyway.
Drivers who hit and run do so for a number of reasons. In some cases, they're inexperienced and don't know what to do. More commonly, however, the hit-and-run driver was breaking the law in some way.
For instance:
- The driver was intoxicated.
- The driver did not have a valid driver's license.
- The driver did not have insurance.
- The driver was engaged in illegal activity.
- The driver had an active warrant for his or her arrest.
If the at-fault driver is never apprehended, you may have legal options. Uninsured motorist (UM or UIM) coverage is a type of coverage on your own car insurance policy that protects you in the event that the driver at fault for the accident does not have liability insurance - or if the driver's identity is unknown. After all, if you don't know who the at-fault driver was, there is no way to know whether he or she has insurance, let alone who the insurance carrier is and what the policy limits are.
Under Georgia law, you are not required to have uninsured motorist coverage, but your insurance company is required to offer it to you.
