Types of burn injuries
Some burn injuries are relatively minor; others are severe. In general, burn injuries are divided into four degrees, depending on severity:
- First-degree burns only damage the outermost layer of skin and do not leave permanent scars.
- Second-degree burns reach the superficial layer of skin and are deep enough to cause infection.
- Third-degree burns extend through the entire dermis (thick layer of skin below surface) and usually leave permanent scars. They may require amputation.
- Fourth-degree burns reach all the way down to muscle and bone. They often lead to amputation or functional impairment of the affected limb.
In general, the higher the degree of the burn, the more significantly your life and health will be affected. But even so-called minor burns can lead to significant complications when infection sets in. And the medical expenses alone to treat a burn injury can be tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.
How truck accidents cause burn injuries
Many truck accidents involve flammable cargo, such as petroleum products, or hazardous cargo that can cause chemical burns. It's very common for people involved in accidents with trucks carrying such dangerous cargo to be burned. Even if the cargo itself isn't dangerous, it's also possible for the fuel tank to leak and ignite, potentially causing a serious burn injury.
